New Year Sati Yoga and Meditation Retreat

See in the New Year with us at Macalla Farm for an alternative celebration of the passing of the year and the start of the new. One of our favourite courses of the year, this is a week of building strength and clarity through meditation and yoga, eating delicious organic food and enjoying good company.

This intensive course is aimed at those with some previous knowledge of meditation and yoga and is ideally suited for those who consciously wish to take time out during the Christmas/New Year period, to reflect on the year just ending and create space and possibility for the year to come.

Integrating mindfulness (sati in the ancient language of Pali of the Buddha) to the practice of hatha yoga allows us to slow down, deepen our experience and increase our understanding of yoga. The practice of Sati yoga enables us to find a balance between the physical and mental practices of postural yoga and meditation as well as allowing for the transformational possibilities of the practice to enter our everyday lives.

Each day starts with a three hour meditation and yoga session. A delicious brunch follows, after which you have some spare time to relax by the fire, or brave the elements and explore the wild and beautiful landscape of the island. We meet again at 4.30 pm for a two hour afternoon session during which we focus mostly on pranayama (breathing), but will also include kryas (yogic cleansing techniques), yin and/or restorative asanas or other meditation practices. The class is followed by a delicious dinner prepared from ingredients grown at the farm. The day concludes with a 30 minute sitting meditation session.
There will be a silent meditation session on the 31st of December, starting at 11.15 pm until midnight to see in the new year.
Please note that this course involves over 5 hours of yoga and meditation practice each day as well as extended periods of silence, and is therefore not recommended to beginners.

The farm will be totally alcohol free for this course, and we ask participants not to bring any alcoholic beverages.

Cost of the course is 720 euros (full board, tuition and transfer from Westport). A 50% deposit, payable online by Paypal or by bank transfer,  is required at the time of booking.

  • Four nights accommodation (sharing in twin rooms)
  • All meals (delicious organic vegetarian food, all vegetables grown on our farm)
  • About 20 hours of tuition in yoga and meditation

When planning your travel, please note that this is winter! It is often the case that there is only one boat per day and that sailing times may change as the ferry service is weather and tide dependent. This is the 14th year we have run this course and we have never had to cancel, though sailing times have sometimes changed at the last moment. Thus, it is important to be as flexible as possible for your travel to Westport on the 22nd. All going as planned, the ferry will be leaving Roonagh pier at the scheduled time of 4.00pm on the first day of the course, but we will in touch by email during the week leading up to the first day of the retreat to clarify travel times and arrangements for transport from Westport to the ferry.
Even if you are coming from Ireland, we recommend that you travel by public transport, rather than drive, as the ferry uses different harbours depending on weather and tide conditions, and therefore may not take you back to your car! Transport will be available from Westport to the boat for course participants.
If you are travelling from abroad, you will need to arrive in Ireland the day before the course and preferably spend a night in Westport. It is also wise to allow for a spare day at the end of the retreat, to afford enough time (and greater peace of mind) for your return travel.
