Connecting with Horses: Yoga and Mindfulness Retreat

22 July 2020 - 26 July 2020

In a world characterized by political uncertainty, increasing inequality and impending ecological collapse, more and more people are realizing their need to (re)connect to what really matters. Many of us have found that connect to nature or to other living creatures is a means of re-connecting to ourselves that can be profoundly healing.

On this unique 4 day retreat we explore this theme with animals that have been evolving for 55 million years and have been our companions for the last 4000 years, horses. Through the cultivation of mindfulness of body, breath and mind, our interaction with the horses at Macalla Farm fosters deep insight into our own nature and bodily reality as much as gaining an understanding of these wonderfully sensitive creatures.
This course is suitable for people with no previous experience with horses as well as those with experience who wish to deepen their relationship with them.

This is an intensive retreat which involves 5 hours of yoga and mindfulness practice every day, as well as a lot of time spent outdoors with the horses, and for this reason, a good level of physical fitness is recommended. Note that this course isn’t about and does not involve horse riding.

The course

The course starts on in the evening of Wed 22nd of July with dinner followed by an introductory talk and a short meditation and finishes in the morning of Sunday 26th of July after brunch, in time for the lunch time boat.
Each day starts with two hours of breath awareness and  mindful movement, followed by a healthy brunch.

In the early afternoon, we spend sometimes outdoors with the farm’s horses. In these afternoon sessions, we look at how horses communicate with each another, and learn how to use yoga and mindfulness techniques to connect with them more effectively.

In the late afternoon, we meet for another indoor session in which we explore the Sati yoga approach to breathwork, which combines mindfulness of breathing practices from the Buddhist tradition and classical pranayama (yogic breathing) techniques, and we look at how this approach can be used to communicate more effectively with horses.

“I attended the yoga retreat with horses last year and absolutely loved it. Ciara and Christophe have an amazing space, which follows all the way through from feeling so welcome, the amazing food (we need a Macalla Farm Cookbook!!), gentle meditation and yoga practices. When it came to working with the horses it was just mind blowing at times and I can’t thank them both enough for sending me off on my equine journey.”  Janice
