Connecting with horses though Sati yoga

At Macalla Farm,  our unique yoga and horsemanship courses are aimed at people who want to build or improve their connection with horses as well as developing an understanding of the role that our bodies and minds play in all our endeavours.

Through the physical practice of certain yoga postures, we learn how to relax and become more aware of our bodies and how we move them. Because horses are masters at reading body language, being more attuned with our own bodies will greatly improve communication with them, whether we are on the ground or in the saddle.

On another, more subtle level, through the practice of yogic breathing, we become more aware of our breathing and learn how to use it as another communication tools with the horses. Yogic breathing also increases concentration, and with better focus, communication with the horses becomes clearer and easier.

Finally, through the practice of mindfulness meditation, we learn to be aware of our emotions and develop a non-reactive mind. Because horses are acutely aware of the emotional state of their handler, being aware and in control of our emotions is essential to build trust with them, and particularly useful when training them, or putting them through new situations such as competitions. In these situations, the confidence, calm and emotional balance developed through yoga and mindfulness practice makes all the difference, for how can a worried horse trust a handler who is in an heightened emotional state of anger or fear?

We run a number of courses combining yoga, mindfulness and horsemanship. See our course page for details.
